Eid celebrations cannot be complete without prayer. Muslims participate in congregational worship on this day, giving thanks to Allah (SWT). Three days of Eid are celebrated, and the Eid Salah (prayer) marks the beginning of it.
The Eid Salah (prayer) begins with Fajr on the day following the first day of Eid. When such circumstances arise, Muslims are encouraged to gather with their local community for Jama’ah (congregation).

Is Eid Salah Compulsory?
It is clear that scholars have differing views regarding the obligation to pray the Eid prayer.
- A duty: Imam Abu Hanifah and some narrations from Imam Ahmad consider Eid prayer as a duty and obligatory for Muslims; those who do not perform it are deemed sinful
- Sunnah Mu’akkadah: Several Imams, including Imam Malik and Imam al-Shafi’i, regard Eid prayers as sunnah (something Prophet Muhammad did). In this sense, it is recommended, but it is not mandatory
- Communal Obligation: It is an obligation of the whole community to pray during Eid, according to Imam Ahmad (fardh kifayah). The rest of the community is excused from performing the act as long as a few members do so
Before you start:
- Making ghusl and dressing in your best clothes before Eid prayer is Sunnah. Eid is actually a time of celebration!
- The Sunnah also requires you to recite takbeer as you leave your home for Eid prayers. Let’s start with Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. In the name of Allah, wa-llaahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, and in the name of Allah, amen.
- After or before the Eid prayer, there are no nafl (voluntary) prayers. In Ibn Abbas (ra)’s account, the Prophet (saw) prayed two raka’ahs of Eid prayer without praying before or after them. According to Bukhari.
- Be sure to make your niyyah (intention) before beginning your prayer, just as you would with any other. Having this intention in mind is essential. It is also possible to verbalize it in the following way: ‘I intend to pray two raka’ah of Eid al-Fitr/Eid al-Adha for Allah facing the Ka’bah.
How to Perform Eid Prayer?
When you wake up in the morning, just before you begin the prayer:
- Take part in the ritual ablution known as ghusl.
- A sunnah is to eat something (you may not be used to this yet). Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) ate dates as part of his prayer preparations.
- There’s nothing wrong with wearing the best clothes. Muslim celebrations encourage Muslims to clean themselves, dress well, and smell great.
- When you are on your way to Eid prayer, say the general takbeerat.
